What is Sciatic Nerve Pain?
“Sciatica” is defined as the pain resulting from irritation of the sciatic nerve. Sciatic Nerve Pain is usually felt from the lower back to the back of the thigh and radiating down below the knee. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, beginning in the low back extending across the buttocks and down the back of the thigh to the front of the calf.
What are the causes of Sciatic Nerve Pain?
There are many different casuse for sciatica. One is a misalignment of a bone in the lower back which pinches the nerve causing pain to shoot down the back of the leg. Another is tight glutial/ buttock muscles which can squeeze the sciatic nerve. Still other causes are misalignments in your hip or pelvis area. Many times, pregnancy can cause a flare up of pain due to the increased weight and pressure on the pelvis. In severe cases, it can be due to a disc herniation.
Treatments for Sciatic Nerve Pain (Sciatica)
There are a few treatments for Sciatica. It’s not something you have to put up with or live with forever.
- Stretches for the hamstring, piriformis and gluteal muscles will help to relieve some of the pain.
- Massage therapy can also ease the spasms in the muscles and the pain.
- Chiropractic adjustments help to realign the bones of the pelvis and lower back so that the sciatic nerve is no longer inflammed or irritated, which then reduces and eventually eliminates the pain.
