Frequently Asked Questions

Must I be completely undressed?

Most massage techniques are best performed directly onto the skin, that is, with the client unclothed. However, you decide how much clothing you prefer to wear for your own comfort. Lesley will work with you to tailor your treatment to your comfort.

Will I be covered during the session?

Throughout every treatment, you will be laying between two clean sheets and a blanket on the massage table. Only the area that is being worked on will be exposed. You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. If at any time you feel you are not comfortable, please let Lesley know.

Will the massage therapist be present when I undress?

Your massage therapist will leave the room while you undress. She will knock when she returns and enter the treatment room only when you are on the table, fully covered by the sheets and ready to begin the treatment.

What parts of my body will be massaged?

After establishing your specific treatment goals, you and your RMT will determine which areas to treat. The therapist will not proceed with the treatment without your informed consent and remember if at any time you feel uncomfortable the treatment can be stopped or modified to your comfort.

What type of lotion will be used?

Lesley uses “Know Your Body Best Massage lotion” which is hypoallergenic, contains no dyes or perfumes and is made with canola oil and water. It is enriched with vitamin E and aloe vera. If you have any sensitivities or concerns about what is being applied to your skin, please let Lesley know when booking your first appointment, or during the assessment and she will be happy to make appropriate adjustments. If your infant or small child is receiving a treatment, Lesley will use olive or grapeseed oil on them just in case they eat it.

What will the massage feel like?

In a Swedish massage, the treatment generally starts with broad gliding strokes that will help to calm your nervous system and relax muscle tension. As your body relaxes, the pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscle tension. It is very important that you let your massage therapist know immediately if you are experiencing any pain or discomfort during the treatment, so that another technique can be used. It is a sign that your body is fighting back and you receive the greatest benefit when your body is not resisting.

How will I feel after the massage?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long term aches and pains caused by tension or repetitive activity. After the initial feeling of being slowed down people often experience increase energy, heightened awareness and greater productivity, which can last for days.

Are there any side-effects or risks associated with massage therapy?

Massage therapy involves the manipulation of soft tissues and joints of your body and depending how your body reacts to those manipulations; you may experience some temporary muscle soreness that should dissipate after a day or two. Other negative reactions may include light-headedness, dizziness and fatigue. Lesley will discuss any adverse reactions with you and if at all possible, change the next treatment to avoid them.

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage inadvisable?

Before you begin your session, your massage therapist will ask some general questions about your health. It is very important that you discuss any health problems you are experiencing and medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is advised that you consult with your doctor and ask for a written recommendation for massage therapy before you begin treatment.
Always keep your massage therapist updated about your health status as it changes, so that the best treatments can be provided to you. Special care should be taken if you are pregnant so make sure to let her know.
