Chiropractic during pregnancy is effective, drug free and most importantly, safe, for the mom and her baby.
Chiropractic starting as early as the first month of pregnancy can help you better deal with the various changes that are occurring to your body. Special adjustments by the chiropractor, designed for the pregnant woman, help balance the pelvis, reduce any nerve irritation in the spine and generally help your body feel more at ease overall.
During pregnancy, there are several physical changes that occur. The following changes could cause a misaligned spine or joint, resulting in back pain during pregnancy (either low-back or mid-back), hip pain, sciatica, pelvic pain, pubic symphysis pain and other symptoms:
- Protruding abdomen and increased back curve
- Pelvic changes
- Postural adaptations
- Normal hormonal changes that cause ligaments to relax
Restoring pelvic balance and alignment is another reason to obtain chiropractic during pregnancy. Currently, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association recommends that women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to establish pelvic balance and optimize the room a baby has for development throughout pregnancy. With a balanced pelvis, babies have a greater chance of moving into the correct position for birth which can result in an easier and safer delivery for both the mother and baby.

“I am thrilled to have Dr. Maya as part of my team of health professionals
dedicated to making my pregnancy a success.” M.G.
Dr. Maya was certified in Webster Technique in 2004 in Toronto, ON and is a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA).
Webster is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that helps to correct pelvic misalignments. This reduces tension in the muscles and ligaments which can allow the baby to get in the best position for birth.
Webster Technique has been successfully used in women whose babies present breech, transverse and posterior.
The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported in the July/August 2002 issue an 82% success rate of babies turning vertex (sunny-side down) when doctors of chiropractic used the Webster Technique.
However, Webster can be used from the beginning of your pregnancy– you don’t just have to wait to see what position your baby is in. In fact, I use this technique on patients the moment they tell me they’re pregnant (after the big congratulatory hug, of course!)
Dr. Maya uses specially designed pillows that allow the expectant mother to lay on her stomach, safely and comfortably during her chiropractic adjustment. They are two sizes in order to change with the progression of the pregnancy.
Many of the mothers wish they could take the pillows home because they are so comfortable!
If a woman is unable to lie on her stomach for her adjustments, they can be performed while the patient is lying on her side.
As your body’s hormone levels change after giving birth, your bones and ligaments start to return back to their original position. Chiropractic helps this process, making sure that everything is aligned. Chiropractic is a very important part of the postpartum process, especially but not only if you’ve had a difficult pregnancy or a traumatic birth process.
Chiropractic also helps your body deal with the added stresses that occur as you hold and take care of your baby. Feeding, comforting, changing and bending over to watching him or her with love in your eyes can increase the strain on your neck, mid and low back. These are movements you’re not used to and can take a toll on your spine.
Get adjusted regularly to decrease the stress on your spine so you can give your best to your baby!
The importance of chiropractic during and after your pregnancy is something that should be considered from the moment you become pregnant. Add chiropractic to your overall pre and post natal health plan. You’ll be glad you did.
