We’ve had quite a lot of cold weather and snow lately. Sometimes our rushed mornings, coupled with this cold weather can lead to something our mother’s warned us would have dire consequences. GOING OUT IN THE COLD WITH WET HAIR!
Our dear mothers cautioned about the ‘deadly combination’ of cold weather and wet hair because they believed that would make us catch a cold.
But actually being cold and wet does not cause you to catch a cold! Colds are caused by viruses that are carried through the air in droplet form (through uncovered coughs or sneezes) or found on surfaces that has been touched by someone who has the virus on their hands.
What cold weather does is make you more vulnerable toward ‘catching’ a bug. But it’s not the temperature that does it. It’s the dryness in the air! The lack of humidity dries out the mucus lining of your nose, making it easier for viruses to penetrate your body.
One thing to keep in mind: No matter how dry or cold the weather is, if your immune system is weak, you have a higher chance of getting sick. The stronger your immune system, the harder your body will work to fight off viruses so that you stay well.
One way to boost your immune system that doesn’t get enough airplay is chiropractic. Chiropractic adjustments remove interference between your brain and your immune system, allowing your immune system to react quickly. Think of a phone system during a blackout. The phones on both ends work -the caller’s and the receiver’s- but the transmission is interrupted so the call doesn’t go through. Chiropractic adjustments fix the transmission between the brain and the rest of your body so that messages get through. With a stronger immune system, you will get sick less often, for less time.
Instead of warning us about going out into the cold with wet hair, our mothers’ should have reminded us to go to our chiropractors! 🙂
